Learn how to grow Mesculun Salad Greens with our easy step by step guide.

Mesculun is known all over the world as the quintessential salad crop. It's a blend of soft salad type greens that are grown to produce quick and easy to grow salads all year round.

Generally the salad mix includes a blend of rocket, arugula, mizuna, corn salad, beets, spinach, miners lettuce and other leafy greens. Many different seed blends can be purchased in packets.

How to grow Mesculun Salad Greens

It's most economical to buy seed packets of Mesculun mixes. For under $5 you can purchse 1 seed packet which will produce enough salad greens for a family of 4 for 6 months.

Mesulun mixes will happily grow all year round. Constant moisture & fertile soil with a good mix of drainage is essential.

Mesculun Growing Guide

  • Prepare the soil well by adding lots of well rotted manure or compost.
  • Soil should be well drained.
  • Plant seedlings out 30cm apart all year round.
  • Sow seeds 5cm deep in a fine seed mix and water sparingly.
  • Once germinated and developed, transplant them into larger trays or put them straight into the garden.
  • Spring, summer, autumn and winter sowings will ensure a constant supply for the table.
  • Mesculun takes approx 4 to 6 weeks to grow.
  • If your plants start to get a little leggy, trim them hard back to encourage new leaves. Or let them go to seed and they will sprout a new crop within a few weeks.

How to harvest Mesculun

Gently pick leaves of the Mesculun plant constantly. Slice off 5cm above ground level to encourage a fresh new crop. Use as a salad green or in stir fries.
