How to grow Freesias

How to grow Freesias

Learn how to grow Freesias with our step by step guide. Freesias are popular bulbs grown for their often strongly scented flowers.

Freesias charming fragrant flowers are very rewarding in the garden, vase or pot and with minimal expense. Freesias can provide a long flowering display if stagger planted.

Freesias are herbaceous plants which grow from a corm (which is a short, vertical, swollen underground plant stem that serves as a storage organ used by some plants to survive winter or other adverse conditions). The corm sends up a tuft of narrow leaves 10–30 cm long, and a branched stem bearing a few leaves and a loose spike of fragrant narrowly funnel-shaped flowers.

How to plant Freesias

  • Best planted in a more sheltered position to avoid wind damage - under the eves, along a fence, and in troughs.
  • Plant 5-6cm deep, 8-9cm apart in well drained soil.
  • Spraying may be required later in the season to control thrips (are tiny, slender insects with fringed wings).

Numerous cultivars have been bred from these species and modern cultivars have flowers ranging from white to yellow, pink and red. They are widely cultivated and readily increased from seed.

Due to Freesias specific and pleasing scent, they are often used in hand creams, shampoos, candles, etc.
