Special Attention

Weeding is essential this month. Don't let unnecessary weeds take valuable water supplies from your vegetables and herbs. Work around the stems of plants with a long handled hoe.

Mound up the earth around potato plants to give the nodules a chance to sprout and also around Florence fennel, leeks and kumara. Cut back flowers from angelica and coriander. Many plants well try to seed the month, so remove the flowers before they become unusable. Watering is very important. Keep watering everyday or setup an efficient irrigation system. Mulch around all plants. Whether it is pea straw, grass clippings, stones of bark a good layer of mulch will save presious plants from the dry summer heat.

Time to Sow

Sow seeds for beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, celery, courgettes, cress, cuccumbers, eggplant, endive, leek, lettuce, mustard, parsnip, peas, pumpkins, radish, silver beet, sinach, spring onions, sweetcorn, tomatoes and turnips.

Time to Transplant

Beetroot, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, courgettes, cucumber, kumara, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, potatoes, radish, rhubarb, shallots and silverbeet seedlings. Plant fresh summer herbs like basil, chives, parsley and thyme in containers by your front and back door.

Time to Protect

Dust broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflower and other seedlings with insecticide powder to control caterpillars, spinkle plenty of slug and snail bait around your garden aswell to keep them at bay!

Time to Harvest

Broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, dwarf beans, lettuce, onions, radish, silver beet, tomatoes and of course in time for Christmas New Potatoes!
