Broccoli

This popular green is easy to grow and if well looked after will provide you with produce for up to 5 months.

Varieties:

Generally, you will find the sprouting and head forming Broccoli typesin your garden centre. Purple and white varieties are available at seedstockists.
Broccoli needs to be harvested before the flowers begin to open

When, where and how to plant:

Broccoli can be grown all year round in many areas. Prepare ground wellprior to planting or sowing seeds. Add compost and blend in well.
You can either buy seedlings or sown your own seeds. When you aresowing seeds, you will find it germinates best during spring andautumn.

Growing Guide

Once seedlings appear or are planted, apply slug and snail bait aroundthe plants. Apply liquid fertilizer each month. Crop should be ready in2 months from planting. Water well over dry periods. Continuousharvesting will ensure the long cropping season, remember once Broccoliflowers the plant will die. Aphids and white butterflies can be aproblem, spray with a good bug spray, insecticide.

Harvest:

Cut the head of the broccoli with a sharp knife once the head hasformed. By cutting the broccoli this way you will encourage a new headsof broccoli to grow. Once Broccoli flowers the plant will die.

How to use:

Use as a vegetable green, in stir-fries, in soups and in pasta dishes. Broccoli will freeze for 2-3 months.
